An Article I Wrote And Continuing To Move Forward
Tuesday, March 27th, 2018 12:50 pmWhen I'd written my last blog entry yesterday I forgot to tell my blog readers what the Conversational Spanish course was about that I'd taken at ACC. I felt the name of that particular course was self-explanatory but in case said course's name wasn't clear, the Conversational Spanish course was where the students in said course had numerous conversations in Spanish with the class's instructor as well as with other students in the class. In addition to having mostly all of our conversations with one another in Spanish the students in said course were also required to give oral presentations in front of the entire class. So needless to say taking Conversational Spanish at ACC was lots of fun for me. In the last blog entry that I'd written yesterday I also forgot to mention that one of the prerequisites for the Conversational Spanish course I'd taken at ACC was that students have at least one or two levels of college-level Spanish under his or her belt. I didn't have any college-level Spanish under my belt at the time and with the exception of that particular course I still don't have any college-level Spanish under my belt. In the last blog entry that I'd written yesterday I also forgot to mention that that same day when I'd met with the academic counselor at the college I'm going to be attending she and I talked with one another about what my major currently was. In hers and my conversation with one another I'd told her that my major was currently undeclared because I didn't know what major that particular college would have that would be close to what I actually want to major in. I then told her that I eventually want my major to be social work but that I know the college I'm going to start off at doesn't have that particular major. The academic counselor then told me that the closest major to social work that the college I'm going to be attending has is sociology. So I told her that I'd be fine with her changing my major to sociology for now. She and I then filled out a form to make that particular change official. Shortly after I'd written my last blog entry yesterday I ate my sandwich from Subway just as I'd written I would in my last blog entry. And said sandwich from Subway was just as delicious as I'd anticipated it would be. LOL. After I'd finished eating my sandwich I read a reply email from my current pharmacy. In the reply email that that particular business had sent me I was informed that I'd need to contact my current insurance company to find out whether there's a mail order pharmacy that said insurance company is contracted with. Shortly after I'd read that email from my current pharmacy I read an email from someone at the local State Library for the Blind where I was informed that for whatever reason the Texas Library for the Blind did not transfer that part of my file over to the State Library for the Blind of the state I now live in. In the same email the lady from the local State Library for the Blind had sent me she also told me that she'd contact the Texas State Library for the Blind and assured me that once she'd received that part of my file she'd let me know. That way I'd be able to continue using the BARD website as well as the BARD phone app. Shortly after I'd read that email from the local State Library for the Blind I ordered my mattress and bed frame from Amazon.com's website. Initially I didn't want either of those items to be sitting around at the apartment I'm currently staying at. However what inspired a change in me was that I'm going to need help putting both of those items into the apartment once both of those items are delivered here. And considering the fact that the friend of mine who's going to put those items together for me will be going out-of-town this coming weekend I wanted to ensure that each item from Amazon.com's website would arrive at the apartment before this coming weekend. Shortly after I'd ordered my bed frame and mattress from Amazon.com's website I called the local DMV. When I first made the call to the DMV, the DMV's automated system told me that I could receive a call back. However in actuality I was unable to receive a call back from the local DMV so I stayed on hold until a DMV technician came onto the other line. While I was on hold with the DMV though I posted an FB status update making my friends aware of what had happened when I'd called the local DMV. Then when a DMV technician came onto the other line I told him that I was totally blind and needed help filling out an ID card application. He replied saying that legally the DMV wasn't allowed to help anyone fill out applications of any kind. I then told him that I'd just moved to this particular state a few months ago so I didn't know anyone here. Saying that didn't change his answer though so I then tried asking him to please ask his supervisor if he or she'd be willing to make an exception for my particular situation. So the male technician put me on hold for a bit then came back, only to tell me that his answer remained the same. He then asked me if I'd like for him to send me a blank ID card application. I went ahead and told him that would be fine. That way I'm going to be able to complete an ID card application somehow (whether I find an acquaintance here who will help me fill it out or someone else entirely helps me fill it out). After I'd gotten off the phone with the guy from the local DMV I posted another FB status update letting my friends know how frustrated I was. Even more frustrating though was the fact that several of my friends commented on said FB status update telling me that those friends have never had a problem getting the DMV staff members to help them when they've physically gone to the DMV. Some of my friends who'd replied to my second FB status update also said that I'd need to physically go to the DMV to have my picture taken for my new state ID. I took those particular comments as patronizing as if I'd never gone through the process of obtaining a state ID before. Sometimes I wonder why I post certain things on FB because the responses I sometimes get from people who comment on the FB status updates that I post are totally unhelpful. A little while later I called my new VRC and left him a voicemail. In the voicemail I'd left him I asked him if he'd please reconsider his decision not to provide me with Orientation and Mobility O&M services. In the message I'd left him I told him that while technology is great, said technology does not replace having an actual O&M instructor. So hopefully he'll at least hear me out on my argument for having a mobility instructor in addition to using technology to navigate around places. Shortly after I'd left a voicemail with my new VRC a friend and I talked with one another about the fact that when I was a student at World Services for the Blind (WSB) last year I was required to write a summary of an article that I'd read for one of my classes there. The article I had to read was about emotional intelligence/emotional IQ. So anyway in the evening I'd told a friend that I'd written said article summary when I was a student at WSB. During that particular conversation with said friend I also told him that the instructor at WSB who'd had me write that particular article summary had told me that the summary of the article that I'd written was college-level writing. I then told my friend that I wasn't sure what that particular instructor at WSB meant in saying that my writing was college-level writing but I took said comment as a compliment nonetheless. When I got up this morning I read through a couple comments my friends made on the FB status update I'd made regarding my frustration with the DMV not helping me fill out an ID card application over the phone. One of the comments my friends made on said FB status update informed me that I could get help filling out an ID card application from a local agency in the new state that I'm in. I'll definitely turn to said resource if I need to do so. Shortly after I'd read that particular comment from one of my friends on one of my last FB status updates I received an email from the academic counselor that I'd met with yesterday. In the email she'd sent me she informed me that the Conversational Spanish course that I'd taken at ACC would only be able to count as an elective class which was fine with me because all I care about is having my Grade Point Average (GPA) look great. So I immediately replied to her email to thank her for letting me know what she'd found out. Shortly after I'd replied to the academic counselor's email this morning I received a phone call from the college I'm going to be attending. The person who'd called me from the college I'm going to be attending was in the OSD and she'd called me to let me know that a reader had been found for me that would help me through the assessment I'd need to take before my next meeting with the academic counselor at the college took place. The lady I spoke with told me that the reader that OSD had found me would be available for me to take the necessary assessment anytime next week. So I originally asked her if I could take the assessment test next Thursday and Friday. I also asked her whether I'd have to complete the Math and English portions of the assessment at the same time or whether I could spread both sections of the assessment out for different days. She said that I could do things any way that I wanted to. She also then reminded me that every office at the college I'm going to be attending closes early on Fridays. So I then asked her if I could do the assessment next Wednesday and next Thursday starting both days at 11:00 in the morning. She said that would work fine. I then asked her if I'd be able to use a computer with Job for Windows with Speech (JAWS) for the English portion of the assessment. She said that she'd have to check with the Assessment Center to find out whether said department at the college even has a computer with JAWS available since that particular department is where I'm going to be taking the assessment. I then asked her if I could use a Braille writer as well as a reader for the Math portion of the assessment. She said that should be fine. The article summary that I'd wrote about above was written by me on April 4 2017. Said article summary reads as follows: The article I read about emotional IQ/emotional intelligence talked about how for the most part, the way each individual views what happens to him or her throughout life determines his or her success or lack thereof. An example in this article talked about how a bus driver was always friendly to whoever rode the bus that he drove. Because the bus driver was so friendly and willing to interact with the people who rode his bus, his happiness rubbed off on everyone he interacted with. Even if there were bus riders who initially came onto his bus in a bad mood, those people’s attitudes changed for the better whenever they rode the friendly bus driver’s bus. The writer of the article on emotional IQ/emotional intelligence believes that the way this bus driver treated other people reflects how he thinks about himself overall. The writer of this article also believes that this bus driver defines what it means to be successful through the way he always treated people with kindness. In the following paragraph we learned about a troubled straight A high school student named Jason. Jason was set on his decision to attend Harvard Medical School but when he received a B on a physics test he begins to believe that he won’t ever achieve his dream. So he took a knife to school and stabbed his physics teacher. The article about emotional IQ/emotional intelligence then talked about how Jason (who is so smart) can carry out an act that is so mean, harmful and uncaring as to stab his teacher. According to this article, the reason Jason is able to act irrationally is because only 20% of a person’s IQ determines how successful he or she is throughout life. According to this article at least 80% of a person’s IQ is influenced by his or her emotional development and maturity. The article on emotional IQ/emotional intelligence then discusses examples of emotional intelligence such as self-motivation, self-awareness, mood management, ETC, which are all effective tools people can use to stay in an upbeat mood. This article talks about self-motivation as being a positive tool that helps people succeed throughout their lives. Whereas people who have a pessimistic attitude are generally less successful in life. The article discussed self-awareness as a person being knowledgeable of his or herself (including what he or she is feeling, thinking, ETC). Because as the article stated, when a person recognizes his or her feelings and emotions, he or she is better able to cope with any negative or otherwise unpleasant thing rather than letting those feelings or emotions bottle up inside. The article then goes on to explain that for a person to become aware of him or herself, it is necessary for him or her to first become familiar with themselves as a person. The article then gives an example of how a person’s gut feelings will often subconsciously determine how he or she handles the things that come up throughout his or her life. In this article about emotional IQ/emotional intelligence, its writer also gives the reader of the article an example about how when a person visualizes something that he or she doesn’t like, he or she subconsciously experiences fear because of the image that person conjures up about whatever the object is that he or she doesn’t like. According to what the article says though we human beings can make an effort to get to know ourselves on as deep a level as possible. That way we are better able to easily manage our lives. The article then gives an example of what it’s like when a person has had a rough encounter with someone; for example, if a person is angry because of a mean-spirited comment that had been said about him or her, most likely that person won’t even realize that he or she is continuing to feel angry throughout the day. However when that person’s anger is pointed out to him or her, he or she should realize that their attitude can be changed for the better. Then he or she has to put in the effort that is required to make a positive change in their mood. The article then goes on to say that although we human beings do not have control over when we are in a bad mood, we do have control over the amount of time that we stay in a foul mood. The following paragraph of the article about emotional IQ/emotional intelligence discussed the fact that rage is the most common emotion for people to have difficulty changing for the better. The reason that particular emotion is difficult for people to change is because the person has to make a very deliberate decision that his or her knee-jerk reaction is not a healthy reaction for anyone. In short this article on emotional IQ/emotional intelligence gives human beings a clear picture of how having a good attitude about the curveballs life throws at us will shape the way we live life rather than break us.
